I first became interested in the keto diet when I saw Jazgoesfitspo’s results on Instagram. She lost an incredible amount of weight from the keto diet. So I started doing my own research. I watched many YouTube videos read articles and listened to podcasts. I would watch Jaz’s Instagram stories on what she was eating and started cooking the same foods.
The diet looked great and I couldn’t wait to be able to eat creamy, tasty foods unlike other clean diets I have previously tried. My first meal I cooked was mince which I made into a patty and broccoli with 30 grams of melted butter. I still remember how full I felt after eating this small meal BUT the best part was for the first time in a year I felt full but NOT bloated and uncomfortable.
Now this next part sounds unbelievable but is 100% true. After eating this one meal I remember waking up the next day with a flat tummy and feeling so much lighter. I went to the scales and weighed myself and I had lost 1 kilo. It isn’t much but I hadn’t weighed less than my normal weight in a year or more. This small win encouraged me to keep going. Within 5 days I had lost 2.5 kilos and was feeling so good about myself. Whether it was only water weight or fat I felt leaner and just overall felt amazing. I hadn’t felt bloated and my digestive system was on point for the first time ever..
I did not get the keto flu like some people say they do on the keto diet. I just felt good. I started using the app carb manager to track my fats, protein and carbs which really helped me realise how many carbs were hidden in the foods I was eating. I can’t even imagine how many carbs I was consuming before this diet. I use to eat a gluten free(GF) diet which consisted of GF bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, chips, lollies, and cakes etc., basically all carbs. No wonder I felt bloated, heavy and struggled to lean up when I was exercising so much. Don’t get me wrong, I was never overweight but I remember getting a body scan and was 31% body fat and that was disappointing for me considering at my leanest I was 17% body fat.
Again after watching Jaz on Instagram I decided to sign up for the JRF keto plan which was on sale for $10 a week for a meal plan. The meals are extremely simple and easy to make which was a massive win. I am not a great cook and don’t like spending my time in the kitchen after work. The meal plan helped me understand the foods I can eat but after a while when my fiancé Peter joined in on the keto lifestyle he wanted to start trying other foods. He quickly became the chef of the house and was enjoying finding different keto meals to try.
Many people say intermittent fasting goes hand in hand with the keto diet and I do this 90% of the time. I was unintentional doing this already. At work I don’t like to stop to eat because I can’t sit still. I always need to be doing something and I like to use all my time at work wisely to get stuff done. So I don’t stop to eat. Most days I don’t eat until 5 PM at night.
Peter and I moved into our new apartment in January and we have not owned scales (a blessing in disguise). The only time I have weighed myself is when we go to Kmart past the scales and we jump on to see what we weigh. The last time I weighed myself I had lost a total of 6.5 kilos without exercising.
The last few weeks I have started to get back into training but have fallen off the keto bandwagon. I don’t believe in restricting myself all the time and want to enjoy foods when I go away and at certain times of the year. Students at school were giving me loads of chocolate for Easter in which I felt guilty not to eat it. Then I went home to visit my family and keto meals at cafes were very limited. Peter also had his birthday and we went out for dinner and of course I had to order my fav pasta dish for old times sake. So while typing this I feel bloated, fluffy and sick from all the sugar and carbs I’ve consumed recently. But tomorrow is a new day and I will be starting fresh with keto again.
